Remaining What It Is

The altar stood in the center of the wall in silence, offering its sense of peace and stability. Always welcoming its humble visitors, it only required gentle care from time to time to maintain its presence. The altar was happy to sit in solitude against the wall and have intervals of time without its many well-wishers. Despite the love and confidence their well-wishers gave them, expectations also got projected onto them and they were doing their best to maintain what they were.

The altar could only focus on what they were and what they could provide. It could not follow the desires it heard or change itself for the sake of its visitors. Its sole existence was to be what it is and be joyful with what it brought to others.

Reflective Qs:

  • What do you think it’s like to be that altar during busy hours?

  • How would you feel about having no control over the love and expectations projected by well-wishers?

  • Would you feel more appreciative of the altar for accepting what it receives and continuing on as it is?

Author’s Note: I was reflecting on what it’s like to be a person that enjoys solitude but has many encounters with people. At times when there’s no control over the situation, it’s more beneficial to remain as I am and appreciate being part of more. What is received can be reflected on when I’m back in solitude.
