Every New Door is an Opportunity

I’ve entered the parking lot of a new building where I am going to start my new job. I know I must go to the elevator, ride it to the fifth level and look for room #508. I’m excited to have a new environment to apply my skills. All I need right now is to get to the office to meet my colleagues.

The instructions sound simple enough, just take the elevator to the fifth floor, look for the room number and enter to meet my co-workers. The building seems quiet and I know that I am early, perhaps my nerves are getting to me. I enter the building and look for the elevator. The sign says to turn right and as I turn, I notice signs and barriers in front of the elevator. This can’t be right! Oh, not on my first day! Why didn’t they warn me?

I approach the elevator and read a sign that says that the elevator is unavailable for the next 2 days and to head toward the stairs to go up. I hadn’t expected this on my first day. If I did, I wouldn’t be wearing my shoes with heels. Well, what can I do? I guess I must find the stairs and climb them.

I find the door to the stairwell and notice that it looks like a door that is barely used. This makes me feel apprehensive but what other choice is there? If I walk through the door, I will find the alternate route to my office and make it on time for my first day. If I walk away, I will be dependent on the elevator and not make it to my job, which will cause me to lose it. I need that job, what is wrong with having to climb stairs?

I climb the stairs carefully, noticing every door to each floor and gladly walk through to the fifth floor. I notice that I am beside room 501. Seven more doors on my left and I will be at my new office. After a small walk, I am at #508 and I’m ready to enter a new door. I open the door and am greeted by my new boss and colleagues.

Despite feeling uncertain on the first day of a new job, I'm proud that I didn't allow apprehensive feelings or an unexpected circumstance to turn me away from my opportunity. I feel a charge of confidence  knowing that I accepted the challenge and made it to my  new job. After the unexpected climb in my high heels, I was greeted by friendliness and introduced to a creative environment where my skills will be valuable. I can already sense the challenge, motivation and rewards to work with in that office. I left the office today feeling at peace and excited for what is to come. Every new door I entered today showed me something new and provided me with something to build upon. Whether it was new routes to travel to where I need to be, encountering new goals or meeting new people to learn from, every door I chose to walk through offered me a growth opportunity.
