Game of Life

You have arrived at your poker tournament, where your opponents are strangers and friends who are there to win the prize. Everyone shows up as equals, presenting only what the eye can see and you can only know about their cards and choices by what your mind and instincts tell you.

Everyone sits around the dealer ready for a night of poker. As you look around the table, you sense different vibes in everyone without knowing its cause. Vibes shift as the cards are dealt but you can't see what causes the shifts. You pay attention to how people are acting, hoping to get a sense of how to play your hand but you aren't certain if some players are bluffing or holding a lucky hand. You must know the cards you hold, the outcome you desire,be willing to play as if you've already won and accept whatever outcome that plays out.

Nobody can see anybody else's cards or know what experience they bring to the table. You can only guess based on your instinct while staying mindful of the cards you hold and the cards that are played. Every gamer must remember that they don't control how the cards are dealt or how another player will play while doing their best to stay mindful of the game and make decisions on the cards they hold. Without expectation but with the intention to win, every player plays to the best of their ability with what they're dealt. Win or lose, everyone can benefit and enjoy the experience.

Reflective Qs:

  1. What is this poker game a metaphor of?

  2. What type of cards do people work with in life?

  3. Who are the other players in real life?

Author’s Note: Thinking about how we can only know about the experiences we receive, I imagined trying to read what other people have being similar to reading cards at a poker game. I started imagining every being as a player in life and reflecting on the tasks required to live to the best of our abilities.
